When the door reaches its closed position, the spring pushes the bolt back into its receiving slot.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To open the door again, the handle operates the mechanism and retracts the latch bolt. Some locks also allow the key to do this.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section id=\"section-2\" class=\"wp-block-group msg-chapter is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Latch bolt or deadbolt?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latch bolt primarily holds the door closed. The deadbolt secures it when operated by the intended control, usually a key or thumbturn.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French term \u201cdemi-tour\u201d, literally \u201chalf-turn\u201d, does not mean that the bolt rotates 180 degrees each time the door opens. On common models, it slides in and out.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section id=\"section-3\" class=\"wp-block-group msg-chapter is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reversibility and opening direction<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bevel must face the correct way for the door to close. Many locks have a reversible latch bolt, but the adjustment procedure varies by manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not force a bolt back: some models can be adjusted without opening the lock case, others require a specific intervention or are not reversible.<\/p>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section id=\"section-4\" class=\"wp-block-group msg-chapter is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When the door no longer stays closed<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A worn spring, a misaligned strike plate, or a sagging door may prevent the bolt from engaging. It is necessary to observe the door opening mechanism and the door closing alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on available parts, the repair may involve adjustment, an internal component or the complete lock case.
