Securing a home during an extended absence
A prolonged absence requires an organisation that continues to function after departure. Beyond the final turn of the key, consider authorised access points, alerts, and individuals capable of intervention.

KEY POINTS
Prepare a simple, well-known process for those involved. An alert system is only useful if someone knows how to respond to it.
Fix before leaving
A lock that catches, a window that closes poorly, or a garage that's hard to secure should be inspected early. The required time depends on the diagnosis and the availability of parts.
Prioritise actual access points and those that connect to the property. Ensure each closure operates smoothly, then note specific instructions for the person who will retain access.
Schedule visits and key distribution
Choose a trusted individual and explain the essential access points. Leaving a key in an external hiding place does not offer the same level of control as a properly organised handover. Avoid also granting multiple duplicate keys without proper tracking.
With an electronic system, assign appropriate rights and a suitable duration. Test the access route before departure and plan a backup method in case of technical difficulties.
Handle mail, alerts, and discretion
Organise the mail receipt process and limit public dissemination of your absence dates. If you have an alarm system, check the batteries, notification transmission, and contact details for those to be reached.
A home security camera must comply with privacy rules and its field of view. Do not use a device to film public roads or neighbours. Also plan for what happens in the event of a network or power failure.
Anticipate the unexpected and potential return visits
Keep the contact details of your assistance and the equipment references. TheVacation peace operation may complete the planned measures, according to your sector's procedures.
On return, retrieve the borrowed keys or revoke temporary access. Report any anomalies observed on the closures promptly. This routine prevents a temporary arrangement from becoming a forgotten permanent access.
