UNDERSTAND & ACT

How can you tell if a lock has been forced?

It may seem an obvious question, but identifying the damage is the first step. Several signs can suggest that someone has forced your lock:

  • Traces visible on the lock: scratches, dents or signs of pulling
  • Distorted cylinder which turns but does not engage the bolt
  • Bolt jammed that no longer retracts fully
  • Warped door around the lock
  • Key that no longer works in the lock
  • A loose or hanging lock or one that has come away from its fixings

If you notice one or more of these signs, contact us immediately. Our professional locksmiths will visit to secure your property.

And what's next? Let's see how we can enhance the security of your door…

1. Replace the lock

The lock is the most fragile component and the most easily forced in the event of a break-in attempt. It is therefore essential to strengthen it. We recommend that you:

  • Replace your old lock with a certified model A2P
  • Choose a lock with strengthened cylinder anti-pick
  • Fit a 3-point lock (at least) to lock the door at the top and bottom

These high-security locks can improve protection when fitted as part of a suitable door assembly.

2. Strengthen the door

The door must be solid to resist attempts at forced entry. For this reason:

  • Fit anti-jemmy strips on the sides
  • Replace your standard handle with a security door handle
  • Choose a door with a solid core or durable materials (solid wood, PVC…)

Your door will therefore be much more difficult to break into.

3. Secure the anchoring points

Hinges, the frame and the threshold can be weak points. Consider suitable reinforcement:

  • Fit hinge bolts
  • Add top and bottom locking points (towards the threshold), where possible
  • Check that the locking points are securely anchored in the frame

Your door will resist break-in attempts much more effectively. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us for guidance on this matter! However, first and foremost, please contact us for rapid and effective locksmith assistance in the case of a forced lock.

What happens during a call-out for a forced lock

When we carry out an intervention to repair a broken lock, we follow a well-defined process in several stages:

  • Damage assessment: Our locksmith carefully examines your door and damaged lock to accurately assess the extent of the damage and the necessary repairs.
  • Opening the door: We will open your door in the least intrusive way possible to reach the damaged lock and carry out its replacement.
  • Replacing the lock: The broken lock is removed and replaced with a new model of high quality. In most cases, we can install a certified lock complying with the A2P standard, thus ensuring maximum security.
  • Checking operation: We test the proper functioning of the new lock and carry out the necessary adjustments for a perfect closure of your door.
  • Security advice: We recommend you with complementary solutions to enhance the security of your door.
  • Cleaning up and restoring the area: Finally, we clean and restore your door and its surroundings. Your property is once again perfectly secured!

In the vast majority of cases, we are able to carry out a repair after a lock has been forced in less than two hours.
