RECOGNISE THE SIGNS

One symptom, several possible causes.

The key gets stuck

It is hard to insert or turn: both the key and cylinder need checking.

The door is hard to close

If the resistance appears mainly when the door is closed, an alignment fault may be the cause.

The mechanism is stiff

A stiff handle or jammed locking points can indicate a fault in the lock.

THE RIGHT FIRST STEP

Do not force the key.

A key that is difficult to turn does not prove, on its own, that the lock is stuck. A seized cylinder, a worn key, moisture, a damaged door frame, or a door that is misaligned can all produce similar symptoms.

Avoid pliers, hammering, and heating the key. Do not pour any product randomly into the cylinder and do not disassemble a lock that you cannot reassemble. If the door is already open and the locking mechanism no longer functions properly, do not close it before diagnosis.

Has the key remained inside the cylinder? See our page Stuck key. If the door will not open at all, the page Jammed lock explains our approach when the mechanism will not move.

ON-SITE DIAGNOSIS

Repair what can be repaired.

We inspect the key, the cylinder, the lock housing, and the door alignment with its strike plates. This check enables us to identify whether maintenance, door adjustment, or a faulty component is required.

When the components are in good condition, appropriate maintenance or adjustment may suffice. If an internal part is worn or damaged, its repair or replacement is assessed based on the model and availability of parts.

A cylinder replacement may be required without replacing the entire lock. If the mechanism can no longer function reliably, we outline the options for lock replacement before the work begins. A closed door may require a pre-opening procedure, the method of which depends on the condition of the closure.

AVANT L’INTERVENTION

A tailored quotation for your situation.

The price depends on access to the lock, diagnosis, adjustment or repair required, and any additional parts. Travel, labour, and potential lock opening are detailed in the quotation. Any changes to the planned work are fully explained to you prior to your approval.

See our pricing details or describe your issue to receive a free quotation. A lock that is simply difficult to operate is not treated the same as a door that is locked with a broken mechanism.

To prepare your call: indicate whether the door is open or closed, whether the key enters and exits, and how long the resistance has been present. A photo of the door, the lock, and its references may be helpful.

PREVENTING THE PROBLEM FROM RETURNING

Maintenance suited to your lock.

The cylinder and mechanism have different requirements. Use only a product compatible with the installed reference, according to the manufacturer's instructions: a common lubricant, oil, or graphite does not always apply.

A deformed or damaged key must be inspected. Do not use the key as a handle to pull the door. If resistance returns quickly after maintenance, investigate the cause rather than applying the product multiple times.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Before arranging help with a stiff lock.

Must a stiff lock always be replaced?

No. Appropriate maintenance or adjustment may suffice if the components are in good condition. Replacement becomes necessary when the cylinder or mechanism is damaged, excessively worn, or cannot be reliably restored.

Which lubricant is suitable for my cylinder?

Follow the instructions for your lock’s make and model. Do not mix products or assume that a general-purpose penetrating oil is suitable. If in doubt, ask for advice before applying anything.

Why does the lock work with the door open but become stiff when it is closed?

This may point toward a diagnosis involving door alignment, hinges, or strike plates. This is not certain: a full inspection of the door closure system is required to confirm the cause.
