A Lock Problem at Night: Urgent Repair or Can It Wait?
Being locked out in the evening or at night requires making the right decision. A door that won't close and a forgotten key with a backup access point do not present the same urgency.

Identify what cannot wait
An entrance door left open after a break-in, a vulnerable occupant trapped inside, or the inability to protect people demands a response tailored to the situation. After an intrusion, prioritize your safety and follow official emergency instructions.
If you have a secondary access point, an authorised access key, or the ability to wait in a safe location, a daytime intervention may sometimes be sufficient. Never attempt to scale a façade or force a window to save on locksmith assistance.
Describe the fault before the locksmith arrives
Please indicate whether the door is shut without locking or locked, whether a key is left inside, and whether the cylinder still turns. Specify the type of door and any visible damage without disassembling the mechanism.
A photo of the lock and an exact address will help prepare a more accurate response. Explicitly ask whether an intervention is possible at this time, in your commune, and what turnaround time may be expected. No slot should be considered confirmed until officially confirmed.
Get a clear cost estimate, even in an emergency
The travel, labour, any potential hourly surcharge, and supplies must be clearly separated. A telephone estimate may need to be refined on site, but the decision to carry out work is based on a written quotation prior to work commencement.
Also inform your assistance if your contract requires it: the terms of agreement and reimbursement differ. A door opening does not automatically necessitate the immediate installation of a high-end lock. Request an explanation for each proposed replacement.
Secure immediately, improve later
Following a degradation, a temporary security measure may be considered prior to definitive repair, provided the door can genuinely be secured. Specialized equipment is not always immediately available.
