Maintenance & adjustments

Which lubricant should you use for a lock?

A key that sticks often prompts the use of the first available product. However, proper maintenance depends on the cylinder or the lock: not all mechanisms accept the same lubricants.

PRACTICAL GUIDE · 2-MINUTE READ

Maintenance of a lock mechanism

KEY POINTS

The manufacturer's recommendation takes priority. Do not add multiple products sequentially into a cylinder, and do not attempt to compensate for a damaged part with lubrication.

Identify the source of resistance

Try a working key and compare the operation when the door is open versus when it is closed. If resistance is only present when the door is closed, the issue may stem from strike plates, door weight, or misalignment.

A bent key, a jammed fragment, or a failing housing cannot be repaired with a spray. If effort increases or if the key is at risk of breaking, stop testing and have the entire mechanism inspected.

Refer to the product manual

Manufacturers may specify a product and method tailored to their cylinders. For example, EVVA recommends specific maintenance products for its systems. This guidance should not be replaced with a universal recipe.

Graphite, silicone, oils, and multi-purpose products are not interchangeable. A product suitable for a door joint may be inappropriate for the small internal components of a cylinder. In doubt, request the recommendation for the exact model.

Apply without over-saturating the mechanism

When the instructions specify an application, follow the recommended dosage and steps. Protect the finish around the key entry point, use a clean key, and wipe away any accessible residues.

Avoid thick greases, food oils, and improvised mixtures. Do not heat the cylinder or introduce aggressive solvents to attempt cleaning. These actions may worsen the fault or damage components.

Prevent rather than multiply products

Clean, undamaged keys, a properly adjusted door, and appropriate environmental protection contribute to optimal performance. Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, adjusted according to usage and environment.

If appropriate lubrication does not resolve the issue, the diagnosis should be reconsidered. MULTISECU can distinguish between a maintenance need, a calibration adjustment, and a part replacement to avoid unnecessary interventions.
