Broken key inside the lock: extraction or replacement?
When a key breaks, the fragment may remain in the cylinder without rendering the entire lock inoperable. The next steps depend on its position, the cause of the break, and the condition of the mechanism.

KEY POINTS
Do not apply glue in the keyway. It may jam internal parts and turn a possible extraction into a necessary replacement.
Keep the situation as simple as possible
If the door is open, keep it open. Store the broken key piece and prepare a good-quality duplicate if you have one. Do not push the duplicate against the remaining fragment inside.
Simply observe whether the fragment protrudes and whether the cylinder appears to be stuck in a rotated position. Avoid attempting to turn the mechanism with the broken piece or a pair of tweezers.
Why some attempts worsen the failure
Using an overly large tool may push the fragment back or damage the keyway. Improvised blades, glue, and repeated manipulation can complicate the extraction process.
Adding a product is not a universal solution. Some cylinders require specific maintenance instructions. Do not heat the mechanism and do not use any mixture designed to create a thermal shock.
Assess the possibility of extraction
A professional has the right tools and techniques tailored to the position of the fragment and the cylinder system. The possibility of retaining the piece should be assessed before deciding on replacement.
Extraction is not guaranteed in all cases. A damaged cylinder, a faulty internal component, or a break associated with a broader jam may necessitate a full replacement.
Address the root cause and verify the result
After removal, test with a working key and check the door opening and closing functions. A resistance only during door closing may indicate a misalignment issue.
Replace a bent or cracked key. If the cylinder needs changing, verify dimensions, operation, and compatibility with the lock. MULTISECU can clarify whether the intervention concerns the key, the cylinder, or another locking component.
