Emergency locksmiths: 7 ways to avoid unpleasant surprises

A closed door should not prevent you from calmly selecting your locksmith. Here are seven tips to understand the intervention, its cost, and the actual work required.

KEY POINTS

Before work starts, request in writing the service provided and its price. A call fee does not necessarily reflect the total cost of locksmith assistance.

Before calling: describe and check the problem

1. Describe the fault precisely. Door shut without locking, broken key, cylinder turning in vain or signs of forced entry do not correspond to the same operations. Indicate whether the door was locked and whether another entry is accessible.

2. Identify the company. Check its name, contact details, and professional identity. A well-placed advertisement or an address on a map does not constitute proof of competence on its own.

3. Contact your home assistance provider. Your insurance or assistance contract may include a procedure or a point of contact. Check the terms before ordering, without assuming that all costs will be covered.

Before work begins: understand the price

4. Ask about all applicable charges. Travel, labour, possible surcharges and parts must be clearly separated. The professional may need to inspect the door to confirm the diagnosis: request the exact charges if you refuse the work.

5. Get the quotation in writing. For home locksmith assistance, the contractual document must formally outline the service prior to execution. The DGCCRF reiterates this requirement from the very first euro. Take time to read the nature of the operations and the total inclusive tax amount.

During and after the work

6. Request a full explanation for a replacement. A door shut without locking does not necessarily require a new lock. Conversely, a damaged room may justify a replacement. Ask what is defective and the available alternatives; any additional charge must be clearly explained before proceeding.

7. Retain all documents. Keep the accepted quotation, invoice, and material references. Test the door closure with the professional and request the keys, property cards, and associated maintenance instructions.

Choose without feeling pressured

When appropriate, obtaining a second opinion is reasonable. An extremely short turnaround, continuous availability advertised, or an unusually low price does not constitute a valid assessment of the offer.
