Is a locksmith quotation too high? How to assess it

A high quotation does not automatically mean a scam. It must, however, be understandable, detailed, and consistent with the fault. Here's how to distinguish a justified job from an inadequately explained proposal.

KEY POINTS

Compare equivalent services, with identical components and inclusive costs. A quoted price over the phone does not replace the official quotation issued for the actual intervention.

Break down the proposed amount

Request a breakdown of relocation, labour, materials, potential surcharges, and taxes. A simple opening, a key extraction, and the replacement of a full-length covered multipoint lock do not involve the same materials or work duration.

The brand and model numbers of the parts must be clearly identifiable. Also verify the disassembly, potential evacuation, adjustments, and finishes. A cheaper quotation may omit part of the work; a more expensive one must justify the additional elements included.

Have the diagnosis explained

Which component is faulty? Can it be repaired? Why is the cylinder, housing, or the entire lock being replaced? These questions are legitimate, even in emergency locksmith assistance.

The destruction of a component is not an automatic step for every closed door. It may, however, become necessary depending on the fault and the equipment. The professional must explain the chosen option and its implications before starting work.

Get a written quotation before work begins

The DGCCRF reminds that home locksmith assistance requires a written and formalised contract from the first euro. The written document must specify the nature of the service and its price prior to execution.

If the diagnosis changes, clearly specify and obtain approval for any additional charges before corresponding works begin. Also request any outstanding fees if you decline repair following the visit. Refer to the DGCCRF guidelines to prepare your request.

Allow time for a second opinion

If possible, compare a different quotation and contact your insurance assistance before placing an order. Coverage conditions vary depending on your policy: an oral promise of reimbursement is insufficient.

Keep all documents, correspondence, and part references. At MULTISECU, you may begin by reviewing the prices page and describe the fault to us so we can prepare an appropriate proposal.
