The latch-only lock
In French locksmith terminology, “bec-de-cane” refers to the spring latch that holds a door closed and, by extension, an internal door latch using this mechanism. The handle retracts the latch to open the door.

A practical closure for daily use
The spring bolt retracts when it meets the strike plate, then extends to hold the door. Lowering the handle retracts the bolt to open the door.
This feature is commonly found on communication doors. The lock can be paired with handles on a plate or on a mosaic, depending on the configuration.
Simple or with condamnation
A simple latch has no locking function. A privacy version adds a way to lock the door from inside, commonly for a bathroom or toilet.
The external emergency function and the door furniture compatibility must be considered. An internal door lock does not serve the same purpose as an entrance security lock.
Dimensions to check
Before replacing the lock, measure the backset, any privacy spindle centres, handle spindle size, lock case and faceplate. Some models have a reversible latch bolt.
An appropriate mechanism usually allows the door's appearance to be preserved. It's also necessary to check that the handle returns correctly and that the strike plate does not create friction.
If the handle drops or if the door catches
A spring, a door furniture fixings or a square may be at fault. A misalignment of the leaf may also prevent the door from closing.
Inspecting the lock and handle allows determination of what needs to be adjusted or replaced. Forcing the operation does not address the root cause.
