Components & reference points
The cam
On a cylinder, the cam is the driving component that rotates to engage the lock mechanism. The same term also refers to the active part of certain keyed cylinders.

THE KEY POINT TO REMEMBER
A cylinder with the correct dimensions may still be incompatible if its cam does not suit the lock.
The linkage between the key and the lock
The key allows the cylinder plug to rotate. The cam transfers this movement to the lock mechanism to move the bolts. On a euro-profile cylinder, the cam is usually in the centre.
The cam is therefore neither the fixing screw nor the bolt that enters the strike plate. These components contribute to the same closure, but perform different functions.
Shapes and configurations
Many cylinders use a central cam. Some locks require a gear wheel or a particular type of drive mechanism; the exact reference must be respected.
On some half-cylinders, the cam may be indexable: its initial position is adjustable. This adjustability does not mean it is a gear-engaging cam.
The cam of a key
On an old key with a shaft, the cam is the part that acts within the lock. Depending on the system, its cut allows it to pass through door furniture or to engage internal components.
To avoid confusion during a request, specify whether you are referring to the key or the cylinder. A photo of the part is often more useful than an approximate range name.
Blocking or replacement
If the key turns freely without operating the lock, the fault may involve the drive mechanism, cylinder or lock case. An assessment is needed before replacing the complete system.
To replace a lock cylinder, check the profile, the lengths of each side, the cam and the desired function. On a certified lock, the new reference must also comply with the authorised configuration.
