THE KEY POINT TO REMEMBER

The mechanism's discretion relates to aesthetics. Protection depends on the complete system.

Components that work together

The lock case contains the operating components. The handle turns the follower to retract the latch bolt; the key and cylinder may operate the deadbolt, depending on the lock function.

The faceplate sits on the door edge. Strikes fixed to the frame receive the bolts. The handle follower remains inside the lock case and does not project into the frame.

What function for which door?

A latch-only fitting may be enough for a bedroom door. A privacy lock can be fitted with suitable door furniture when required. An entrance door needs a security solution appropriate to the whole door.

Single-point and multipoint versions are available, with key-operated, lift-to-lock or automatic mechanisms. The choice depends on the users, the door and the protection required.

Advantages and limitations of in-situ installation

The concealed lock case allows for a subtle finish and offers great flexibility in selecting compatible handles. A replacement of identical design can preserve existing cutouts.

However, during first installation, an appropriate housing must be provided. Replacing a mortise is not a trivial task, especially on a metal door, fire-rated or certified.

When to schedule an intervention?

A key that forces, a handle that does not return, or a blocked bolt justifies a check. The cause may be a worn component, overly tight door furniture, or a door misalignment.

Depending on the diagnosis and available parts, a repair, cylinder change, or lock case replacement will be proposed. The entire unit does not necessarily need to be replaced.
