A Broken Key in a Lock: Causes and Prevention

A key that breaks is often the final sign of a mechanism that has become difficult to operate. Before replacing components, it is essential to understand what was resisting: the key, the cylinder, or the door itself.

Broken key in a lock

KEY POINTS

Don't force it any further and keep both pieces of the key. Removing the fragment is not sufficient if the cause of the blockage still exists.

Why does a key eventually break?

A bent, cracked or heavily worn key is less able to withstand pressure. A double imperfection can also catch. If you compensate for this resistance by turning harder, the most fragile part may break inside the cylinder.

The problem doesn't always stem from the key. A sagging door, bolts rubbing against strike plates, or a greasy cylinder forces abnormal effort. The need to lift the handle or pull hard on the door before locking is a key diagnostic clue.

The right actions after a break-in

Leave the mechanism in its current position and avoid inserting another key, screwdriver, or any object that could push the fragment further. Do not use glue, heat, or any improvised product inside the keyway.

A photo of the cylinder entrance, the door, and the remaining piece in your hand helps prepare the intervention. Specify whether the door is open, simply shut without locking, or locked. If you're blocked outside, consult our emergency first-aid guide.

Extract, adjust, or replace?

A extraction may allow the cylinder to be retained if it is intact and functions normally. A decision is made after inspection: a visible fragment does not mean its removal will be simple, and a broken key does not automatically require replacing the entire lock.

If the cylinder remains stiff with a key in good condition, further checks are required. Replacement may be appropriate in cases of wear or deterioration. If the lock operates smoothly when the door is open but is difficult when closed, the alignment of the door and strike plates should first be verified.

Avoiding a further break-in

Reproduce the key from a good-quality sample according to the manufacturer's specifications. A deformed key should be set aside. Do not use the key as a handle to pull the door.

For maintenance, follow the manufacturer's instructions: not all lubricants are suitable for all cylinders. As soon as resistance is detected, a adjustment or early diagnosis can prevent immobilisation. MULTISECU checks the entire locking system before recommending the actual parts needed.
