Choosing the Right Lock Cylinder

The right cylinder is one that matches your lock, your dimensions, and your usage. Before comparing brands, gather the information that ensures a reliable choice.

Cylinder and lock key

KEY POINTS

Profile, lengths, operating mechanism, and function are verified separately. Two cylinders with the same total length may not be suitable for the same door.

Identify the profile and the operating mechanism

The European profile is common, but there are also round cylinders, Swiss-profiled and brand-specific systems. The external shape is the first indicator, not a guarantee of interchangeability.

Check the cam or the drive mechanism that controls the lock. Some mechanisms require a gear wheel, a specific position, or a particular reference. On specific equipment, the brand and lock model number are essential.

Measure both sides

Measure from the centre of the fixing screw to each end of the cylinder. Record the outside and inside measurements separately, including the thickness of the door furniture and protective fittings.

Do not rely solely on total length. An asymmetric cylinder must be correctly oriented, especially when it has an internal button or specific protective features on the exposed side.

Define useful functions

A thumbturn makes the lock easier to operate from inside. Depending on the model, an emergency function allows an outside key to work even when a key is left inside. A half-cylinder is used for other applications, including some garage door controls.

If you plan on motorisation or a single key for multiple access points, indicate this before purchase. Compatibility and key organisation options must be verified from the outset.

Compare security features and control of spare keys

Inspect the documented features against forced entry, drilling, or tampering, as well as the key entry protection. The handle and mounting also limit the exposure of the cylinder.

Daily key replication, security card, and duplicate availability are key considerations. For an A2P-certified lock, select a cylinder listed in the compatible configuration. Insurance requirements must be reviewed in your own policy.
