How Does an Up-and-Over Garage Door Work?

A hinged door moves a panel from one point to the ceiling. Its operation combines guidance, balancing, and closure; any motorisation does not replace these mechanical components.

KEY POINTS

Springs and balancing components store energy. Their adjustment and replacement must be carried out by a qualified professional in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

The panel relocation

According to design, the panel pivots and moves via arms, rails, and guiding elements. Some doors extend outward during operation, requiring the preservation of clear space in front of the garage.

Clearance, mounting points, and roller condition affect movement. A door that tilts or binds must not be forced to complete its cycle.

The role of balancing

Springs or other devices counterbalance part of the panel's weight. Proper balancing facilitates operation and ensures the door functions under intended conditions.

A sudden feeling of excessive weight, damaged cables, or a broken spring requires immediate cessation of use and inspection. Do not attempt to retighten or replace these components without proper expertise.

Manual lock and motorisation

On a manual version, a handle and lock can operate hinges or locking points. Their alignment must allow for seamless closure.

A motorised door adds a drive mechanism, a control system, and security features according to its configuration. Manual unlocking follows a specific procedure for the motor and door; it must not be performed without considering the weight and balance of the panel.

Maintenance and detection of anomalies

Remove any accessible obstructions and follow the instructions for checks and maintenance points. Do not lubricate rails, springs, and components indiscriminately: specifications vary.

A new noise, incomplete closure, or a lock catching justifies an inspection prior to failure. Diagnosis can differentiate a closure issue from a guidance, balancing, or motorisation fault.
