Which lock to choose for a gate or a gate post?
Externally, the lock must function despite weather conditions and gate movement. The choice depends on the material, access geometry, and desired control system.

An external lock is selected with its strike plate and fixings. A sagging or wind-battering door must be addressed before solely replacing the mechanism.
Identify the assembly and dimensions
A surface-mounted lock case, a mortice lock within a door profile and a lock integrated with a powered opening system require different replacement procedures. Record the backset, centres, dimensions and handing.
The material and width of the profile determine the installation possibilities. The strike plate must match the bolt, the door leaf clearance, and normal access movements.
Anticipate external exposure
Check that the equipment is rated for outdoor use and examine its corrosion-resistance specifications. A shiny finish alone does not show how well it will last.
Avoid installations that retain water around the mechanism. Maintenance follows the manufacturer's instructions, including checking fixings and joints when access starts to feel stiff.
Select the actuation mode
A key and handle may suffice for simple access. A intercom, a code, or a badge may trigger a strike plate or another device designed for the door.
An electric strike releases the bolt; it does not fully replace a motorised lock. Check the power supply, operation during power failure, and the possibility of egress based on the site's usage.
Verify operation after installation
The closure must remain reliable without violently slamming the door. Test the bolt engagement, key operation, and, if necessary, remote control.
