How do you reverse a door latch bolt?

The bevel of the latch bolt must match the door's closing direction. On some locks, this part can be reversed. On others, the mechanism requires a right or left reference.

KEY POINTS

The latch bolt may be reversed, not the deadbolt. The method depends on the model: consult the manual before any disassembly.

Identify the part to reverse

The latch bolt is generally the beveled part operated by the handle. When the door is closed, its inclined face meets the strike plate and allows its withdrawal before it reinserts itself.

The deadbolt participates in the locking mechanism operated by the key or another component. It does not perform the same function. On certain doors, components have a specific shape: their identification comes before any intervention.

Check that the lock is reversible

Note the make and model, often shown on the faceplate or lock case. The documentation explains whether the latch bolt is reversible and how it is adjusted. Depending on the design, this may involve an external control, a screw or work in the workshop.

There is no single action valid for all locks. Do not open a mortised housing and do not force the component with pliers. Springs and small parts may shift, and the lock may lose its correct function.

Work with the door open and verify the result

If the instruction allows for a simple reversal, keep the door open and follow only this procedure. Keep screws in order and avoid modifying parts by drilling or cutting.

After reassembly, operate the handle several times. The latch bolt must retract and spring back freely. Then close the door gently to check that the bevel meets the strike correctly and the lock operates smoothly.

If the door still closes poorly

A correctly aligned bolt may still rub if the door has sagged or if the strike plate is misaligned. Inspect the clearances around the door opening and compare the operation of the door when open and when closed.

On a multipoint lock, a security door, or equipment with an uncertain reference, a professional inspection prevents inappropriate disassembly. The issue may stem from adjustment rather than a complete replacement.
