Three-point or five-point lock: how do you choose?

Three or five points indicate the number of locking zones designed by a mechanism. This figure is useful, but it's not enough to compare the security or quality of two locks.

KEY POINTS

A five-point lock is not automatically more resistant than a three-point lock. The model, any certification, the strike plates, and the installation must all be compared.

Understand the distribution of points

A multipoint lock can act laterally and, depending on the model, partially at the top or bottom. The types of bolts and their distribution vary from one lock to another.

The points must engage correctly into their strike plates. A fragile frame, a lightweight door, or poor installation can limit the overall performance, even when there are many points.

Compare complete configurations

Check the lock reference, the cylinder type, the protection features, and the mounting hardware. On an A2P-certified set, the level is tied to a defined configuration; replacing a component must respect this compatibility.

Do not confuse the A2P stars of the lock with the BP ratings of a doorset. Your requirement may also depend on your insurance contract, which should be checked in its terms rather than inferred from a general rule.

Take into account the existing door

The thickness, height, material, condition, and available space influence the choice. A mortice lock, a surface-mounted lock, and a full-length covered multipoint lock require different workmanship.

Check the ease of operation, handle, opening direction, and any property restrictions. A door that feels forced must be adjusted before installing a new lock.

Select with a comparable quotation

Request the references, number, and layout of points, included components, and installation work. A rebuild or strike plate adjustment may be decisive for the outcome.

MULTISECU assesses the multipoint locks based on your door and usage. The aim is a consistent set that closes easily and whose features are clearly explained.
