Strengthening the door
Strengthening a wooden entrance door: available solutions
A wooden door can sometimes be preserved and reinforced. The decision depends on its condition, structure, and the work required to support an additional lock or security barrier.

KEY POINTS
The reinforcement begins with a sound support. A metal plate or a more robust lock does not automatically repair a warped, degraded, or poorly secured wooden frame.
Inspect the door and frame
Inspect the wood condition, joints, areas around fixings, and the overall structural stability. Signs of moisture or previous repairs can guide the diagnosis.
Check the door's closure and clearances around the opening. A sagging door must be adjusted or resecured before installing equipment that would make locking more demanding.
Strengthen the locking zone
A multipoint lock can distribute the closure across multiple points. A security door handle, a cylinder guard, or an appropriate plate can complete the control zone.
The selection considers the door's thickness, available space, and the strength of the fixings. Strike plates and their anchors are just as important as the mechanism mounted on the door.
Compare types of steel door reinforcement
A blindage can take various forms, including a folded sheet, with returns or a more enveloping finish, depending on the design. The specifications must be clearly stated in the quotation to understand exactly what is protected.
The added weight necessitates a review of the hinges and the support. A hinge reinforcement bar may be considered in certain projects. A steel door reinforcement installed on an existing door does not automatically equate to a certified doorset.
Decide between retaining and replacing
If the opening and frame remain intact, a targeted reinforcement may be appropriate. If multiple components are degraded or incompatible with the required standard, replacing the doorset may be more suitable.
