The door espagnolette mechanism
An espagnolette mechanism operates several locking points using rods connected to a central mechanism. Its design depends on the door or French window and how it is used, including whether it secures the normally fixed leaf of a double door.

THE KEY POINT TO REMEMBER
A multi-point lock isn't selected solely by the number of bolts: their function, the strike plates and the door's resistance also count.
How does an espagnolette mechanism work?
The central housing transmits the movement of the handle or key to a locking mechanism. Depending on the model, this mechanism shifts bolts, bolts or levers which align with their strike plates on the door frame. Some bolts mainly contribute to joint compression; not all provide an equivalent security point.
An espagnolette mechanism may be morticed into the edge of the door or surface-mounted. A full-length cover can conceal surface-mounted rods: it is a casing for the mechanism, rather than a third method of fitting it.
Lift-to-lock, key-operated or automatic
With a lift-to-lock espagnolette mechanism, you lift the handle to engage the locking points, then usually turn the key to lock them. On a key-operated model, turning the cylinder moves the bolts. An automatic version engages some locking points when the door closes.
Before going out, check how your door opens from outside. A fixed external handle and an engaged latch bolt can leave you locked out even if you have not turned the key.
Emergency-release espagnolette bolts
Often mounted on the semi-fixed jamb of a double-door door, it allows the hinges to be operated through a central movement. It differs from a standard entrance door lock.
On an evacuation passage, the selection must take into account the full door and prescribed fittings. The term 'fire escape' is insufficient to establish the overall compliance.
Select, replace, and maintain
Record the model reference, backset, centres, faceplate dimensions, locking point positions and operating direction. Timber, uPVC and aluminium doors have different spaces and fixing arrangements for locks.
If the handle becomes difficult to pull, do not force it: the fault may stem from the door adjustment or strike plates, and not solely from the housing. Replacing a compatible component may sometimes be sufficient. Cleaning and lubrication must follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
