Windows & secondary access points
How can you secure a top-hinged window?
In French, “vasistas” often describes a small high-level or partially opening window. Identify its opening mechanism before choosing an accessory…

KEY POINTS
Safety of people, ventilation and resistance to intrusion are distinct requirements. Equipment useful for one does not automatically address the others.
Identify the opening and its constraints
A roof window, a door and a small facade opening do not strengthen in the same way. External accessibility, material and hardware determine the possible solutions.
Check the mark and available references. On a roof window, compatible fittings are often specific to the range. It's also essential to preserve watertightness and avoid altering water drainage paths.
Check the existing locking system
Inspect the handle, strike plates, and alignment. A window that no longer seals properly may require adjustment or a hardware component, rather than an additional lock.
The glazing must also be checked with its frame. A small size or height position is not sufficient to render access negligible if a roof, balcony, or support makes it accessible.
Select fittings based on their function
A keyed handle can restrict operation. An opening restrictor serves a different purpose and should be selected based on user needs, especially when a child may reach the window.
To enhance against intrusion, look for equipment designed for this installation and a mounting solution compatible with the window frame. Do not present an adhesive window block or door restrictor as equivalent to a full closure.
Keep the room practical to use
Do not seal an opening required for ventilation or drainage without a full situational assessment. Ventilation needs and occupant safety must remain considered.
If access to the opening is difficult, avoid an improvised high-altitude intervention. A professional can inspect the lockset, propose a compatible repair, and verify operation after installation.
