How to Choose a Window Lock

A locking handle, an espagnolette mechanism and an additional security lock act on different parts of a window. Start by identifying the window’s opening method and the hardware already fitted.

Window closure adjustment

KEY POINTS

Window security depends on the sash, the closure mechanism, the anchoring points, and the glazing. A keyed handle alone does not transform the entire unit into a burglary-resistant window.

Identify the window’s locking system

A hinged window generally uses fittings or an espagnolette mechanism to operate several locking points. A sliding window uses different mechanisms, suited to lateral movement and the frame profile.

To identify a window, note the brand, model numbers, and visible dimensions. On a handle, the square length and cross-section, as well as the mounting spacing, must be compatible.

Define your needs: access, child safety or burglary protection

A keyed handle can restrict internal operation or enhance certain closure systems. An opening restrictor may address another need, particularly in rooms used by children.

These functions must be distinguished from burglary resistance. A door restrictor does not necessarily provide this feature, and a partially open window does not offer the same level of security as a fully locked opening.

Improve security without damaging the window frame

The selection of an additional lock depends on the material, available space, and anchoring feasibility. On a PVC or aluminium profile, improper drilling may damage the glazing, drainage, or hardware component.

You must also inspect the strike plates, the alignment of the hinges, and the condition of the support. A forced closure often requires adjustment prior to the installation of additional security features.

Check the glazing and other access points

A delayed-entry glazing can complement the closure, provided the window frame and its mounting are compatible. The double glazing selected for insulation is not automatically security glazing.

At ground level, assess accessible windows and window-and-door units as a complete system. MULTISECU can guide you toward a consistent closure solution matching the configuration, without recommending the same accessory for every opening.
