7 methods to strengthen a ground-floor window

An accessible window warrants a full assessment, from glazing to fixings. These seven approaches address different needs: they are selected based on the type of window and the room's usage.

KEY POINTS

A window in an oscillating or partially open position is not fully closed. Check the usage conditions of the equipment and your insurance policy.

Make the locking system reliable: three approaches

1. Adjust the opening sashes. A lockset only functions correctly if the closure points meet their strike plates. Address friction and abnormal play.

2. Inspect the strike plates and anchors. Their condition and fixation contribute to resistance. The selection of reinforced components depends on the window frame system.

3. Choose an appropriate handle. A keyed handle can complete the system, but its presence alone does not guarantee the window's overall resistance.

Strengthen the window: two options

4. Consider an additional lock. Installation must respect the material, profiles, and glass position. A makeshift drilling could damage the window.

5. Inspect the glass. A break-in retardation glass may be appropriate if the frame and its mounting are compatible. Double glazing with insulation does not automatically provide this function.

Add protection suited to the surroundings

6. Evaluate external protection. A shutter or grille may suit certain situations. Check urban planning rules, co-ownership regulations, and evacuation requirements before proceeding.

7. Install an appropriate detection system. An alarm can detect a door opening or incident based on its sensors. It complements mechanical protection and requires an alert response procedure.

Choose improvements that work together

Start with windows that are genuinely accessible and existing defects. A fitting installed on a misaligned lock or a damaged frame does not address the underlying issue.

The assessment allows prioritising adjustment, repair, reinforcement or replacement. MULTISECU can inspect the closure and explain the appropriate options for your installation.
