Burglary Prevention: Secure Your Entrances and Routines

Home security depends on several elements working together: secure access points, consistent habits and suitable detection systems. The aim is to reduce vulnerabilities, without promising zero risk.

Security door handle and cylinder on a security door

KEY POINTS

Start with the most exposed entries. A high-end cylinder does not compensate for an open window or a degraded door frame.

Inspect all access points

Check the main door, but also the garage, accessible windows, and secondary doors. Inspect door clearances, strike plate fittings, and hinge condition. Any door that doesn't close properly warrants a diagnosis before adding new equipment.

For the entrance door, the door leaf, frame, lock, cylinder, and its protection work as a system. Depending on the existing condition, adjustments, a reinforced handle, steel door reinforcement, or a doorset may offer different solutions.

Organise keys and access points

Avoid leaving a double lock in close proximity to the entrance. Identify who holds the keys and reassess the situation after a loss, a change in tenant, or renovations. Cylinder replacement may be sufficient if the mechanism remains suitable.

For a rental property or regular access personnel, access organisation can be helpful. However, an electronic solution requires proper access rights management and a backup method; it does not eliminate the need to verify the door's mechanical strength.

Prepare for absence without making it visible

Close access points according to their intended locking mode and, if necessary, delegate surveillance to a trusted individual. Avoid publicly announcing exact dates of absence. Managing mail and maintaining regular presence can help maintain a monitored property.

An alarm or external lighting can supplement these measures. Their installation and configuration must match the specific location. They do not replace appropriate locking and do not guarantee the absence of forced entry on their own.

Protect assets and plan for the aftermath

Keep essential documents, references, and proof of important equipment in an appropriate location. A safe may meet a specific need; its selection and anchoring must be assessed in relation to the environment and your insurer's requirements.

After a forced entry attempt, do not limit yourself to checking that the key turns. The cylinder, housing, frame, and fixings may have been weakened. MULTISECU assesses the damage and distinguishes between immediate resecurity and scheduled improvements.
