The History of Locks: From Mechanical to Electronic Access

To protect a passage, reserve access, or preserve belongings: these needs have accompanied the evolution of the lock. Its history can be read through the materials, mechanisms, and the way a key is recognised.

Old lock and metal frame

KEY POINTS

Innovations have accumulated rather than been replaced all at once. Today, traditional mechanisms, cylinders, and electronic controls continue to coexist.

From old closures to metal fittings

The earliest locking systems relied on movable components that could be locked or released using a suitable tool. The advancement of metalworking later enabled more compact mechanisms and increasingly diverse manufacturing techniques.

An old lock can also serve as a decorative element. Plates, keyways, and fittings reflect the care taken both in the door and its closure. Retaining this assembly sometimes involves repairing a single part rather than replacing the entire door furniture.

Accuracy becomes a central issue

The proliferation of key types and internal components led manufacturers to seek greater precision and consistency. In the history of the Bramah brand, a first lock appeared in 1784, followed by a patent in 1787.

In the 19th century, the Yale family contributed to the development of pin-tumbler locks and flat keys. These developments illustrate an important change: increasingly separating the mechanism that recognises the key from the mechanism that operates the lock.

The door becomes a unit to protect

A lock never functions alone. The evolution of doors, frames, and fittings has paralleled that of the mechanisms. Multi-point closures distribute anchoring points, while door furniture can protect the cylinder area.

This overall assessment remains useful for an old door: a modern cylinder does not alone correct a deteriorated frame. The quality of installation and the condition of the support must be considered alongside the hardware.

From physical keys to digital authorisations

Electronic systems allow, depending on the product, the use of a badge, a code, or a smartphone to manage authorisations. Some solutions motorise a lock; others permit manual operation after identification.

The contemporary choice therefore lies in combining mechanical protection with daily use. Whether for a heritage door or a recent entrance, MULTISECU seeks a solution tailored to the existing setup. The history of the lock reminds us that innovation is only useful if it addresses a genuine need.
