Double-Bitted Locks: Recognising the Key and Mechanism

A double cam key features two parts cut around its shaft. It is associated with certain groove mechanisms, particularly on older locks or equipment from different generations.

KEY POINTS

The key's shape is insufficient to determine a lock's resistance. The design, reference, and overall condition must be assessed.

What does “panneton” mean?

The cam is the part of the key whose shape interacts with the mechanism. On a double-cam key, two sets of cuts are located on either side of the shaft. This design differs from the flat key commonly used with many cylinders.

In a tongue mechanism, the key positions internal components to allow the locking movement. This is the principle of operation: the details vary significantly from one lock to another.

What appearance alone cannot reveal

A large key is not necessarily more resistant to replication or forced entry. Conversely, apparent age does not justify replacing the entire mechanism.

The brand, reference, protections, and any applicable certifications are more reliable indicators. It is also important to examine the lock's mounting, the condition of the strike plates, and the door's solidity.

Maintaining and identifying an existing lock

A worn, bent key or a mechanism that sticks requires a check. Avoid applying excessive force. Keep a good condition sample and request reproduction conditions appropriate to the brand.

For initial identification, photograph the housing, the door edge, and any markings. Detailed key views should only be sent to the relevant professional and must not be published online. Do not disassemble a complex housing to manually identify the reference.

Repair or upgrade the locking system

A repair may be considered when compatible parts are available and the overall system remains viable. Some installations allow an upgrade to a different system; this depends on the lock and the door type.

Replacement is therefore neither automatic nor universal. MULTISECU checks dimensions, operation, and security requirements before proposing a solution. A conversion must preserve door usage and comply with installed component conditions.
