Ball-bearing keys: how they work, benefits and limitations
We sometimes refer to 'pin keys' for keys that don't use the same mechanism. It's important to distinguish a genuine mobile pin from a key simply pierced with points or cups.

KEY POINTS
The key's shape is an indicator, not a certification. Identify the system and its reference before ordering a duplicate or a new cylinder.
Identifying the system involved
Some systems use an integrated ball in the key to interact with cylinder components. Other keys have machined recesses without a movable ball. These designs are not interchangeable.
For example, the Bricard Supersûreté range includes configurations with or without a ball. Multi-branch keys should not be automatically equated to all flat key-point keys. A photo of the key and cylinder helps distinguish between them.
What this type of key can offer
A movable component adds a unique identification element specific to the system. It may be part of a design intended to enclose reproduction and increase mechanism complexity.
Security, however, depends on the entire system: cylinder strength, entry protection, lock, fastenings, and door condition. No key detail alone can confirm that a lock is impossible to open or damage.
Ordering a suitable spare key
Verify the brand, reference, and reproduction procedure. A security card or supporting documents may be required. Conditions vary depending on the range, system protection, and available documents.
Don't wait until you've lost your last key to check this procedure. Store the card in a separate location from the keys and never publish its number. If the key is worn or damaged, report it before having a duplicate made.
Correct maintenance and replacement
A stuck ball, a bent key, or a difficult manipulation warrants a check. Never try to file the key or glue the ball in place. Use only the recommended maintenance for the affected system.
To replace the cylinder, verify the profile, dimensions, drive mechanism, and compatibility with the lock. MULTISECU can identify your equipment and explain options for preservation or upgrade.
