How to Choose a Letterbox Lock
A letterbox lock must fit the door, the cam, and the mail distribution system. External similarity between two small barrels is not sufficient to guarantee compatibility.

KEY POINTS
Measure the existing installation and verify postal usage before ordering. A solid barrel does not compensate for a damaged door or mounting.
Identify the existing installation
On many letterboxes, the key triggers a cam at the back of the barrel. This component secures the door. Its length, shape, and position must match the mounting point.
Note the box brand, door thickness, mounting dimensions, and barrel body length. A photo of the interior, when the box is open, is useful to complete these measurements.
Check compatibility with postal delivery access
In a communal building, fittings may depend on the postal access system and the building's overall organisation. Replacement must preserve the functionality required for letter distribution.
Before modifying a shared facade or a collective closure, contact the relevant building manager. Not all small locks sold for furniture or boxes are suitable for a letterbox.
Consider exposure to the weather and the condition of the letterbox
Externally, materials, anti-corrosion treatment, and the protection of the key entry point are critical. Infiltration or a warped door may interfere with closure, even with a new cylinder.
Inspect the cam, screw, or retaining clip and the mounting area. After degradation, it may be necessary to restore the door's condition rather than simply replacing the lock.
Replace the lock and test it with the door open
If the box is open and the mounting is confirmed, replacement can be straightforward. Keep all parts in order, avoid deforming the metal through excessive tightening, and check the cam rotation before closing.
In the case of a lost key with a closed box, do not attempt a makeshift drilling that could damage the door panel. A proper diagnosis will determine the appropriate opening method, followed by installing a compatible lock with a new key set.
