Mechanical combination lock

A mechanical combination lock allows opening via a code without electrical power. It can be fitted to a door, shared access, or a safe, with highly different mechanisms depending on the application.

THE KEY POINT TO REMEMBER

No batteries does not mean no maintenance. And a shared code generally does not allow identifying each user.

A code that releases the mechanism

On a door, entering the correct combination usually allows operating a handle or button. Models with keys and safe dials do not work the same way.

The number of digits, possible combinations, and the code change procedure depend on the product. Therefore, the user manual should be consulted rather than applying a universal method.

Daily convenience benefits

No batteries means no need for battery replacement, and a code eliminates the need to distribute certain keys. For a small group of users, a mechanical lock can offer a simple solution.

Operation does not depend on an app or a network. However, it's always essential to choose a product suited to the frequency of access and the environment: not all models are suitable for outdoor use.

Know the limits

A code can be shared, observed, or forgotten. When a person no longer needs access to a location, changing the combination may require notifying the entire group. Individual rights, schedules, and logs are generally not available on a purely mechanical system.

The resistance to forced entry depends on the complete lock, the door, and the installation. The presence of a keypad alone does not constitute a certified security level.

Select and have the right model installed

Check the door opening direction, door thickness, mounting dimensions, internal release mechanism, and any emergency opening. For a safe, the lock must be compatible with the equipment and its certification.

After installation, test the door release in open position, then under real-world conditions. Retain the instruction manual and plan for a code change procedure. If you require managing multiple user profiles, an electronic access control may be more suitable.
